The Department of Intellectual Property (DoIP) has developed a draft National Copyright Policy in consultation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The overall purpose of the proposed policy is to provide clear direction to systematically steer the development activities of the copyright system so that it contributes toward the growth of the Creative Sector in a desirable manner and unleashes its potential to contribute to a knowledge-based economy. The Policy would mark a significant development underpinning the Creators and the Creative Industry with concerted emphasis on creation, promotion, and protection in the Creative Industry. In compliance with the Covid-19 protocols, which are in place, the Department organized a National Stakeholder Consultation on May 25 and 26, 2022, for two groups. The first day was for the representatives of the Creative Sector, and the second day was allotted for the government agencies. The consultation with these relevant sectors provided a forum for in-depth discussion and an opportunity for soliciting theirfeedback to refine the policy further. As a way forward, the Department will be incorporating the feedback gathered during the consultation into the draft policy and re-circulate it further to the stakeholders for any additional inputs. The refined draft will also be shared on our websites for public review to gather a broader consensus on the policy.
